What is meditation and Why to meditate ?
“Meditation is the dissolution of thoughts in eternal awareness or pure consciousness without objectification, knowing without thinking, merging finitude in infinity.”
"When the mind has been trained to remain fixed on a certain internal or external location, there comes to it the power of flowing in an unbroken current, as it were, towards that point. This state is called Dhyana.
These ideas have to be understood in Dhyana, or meditation. We hear a sound. First, there is the external vibration; second, the nerve motion that carries it to the mind; third, the reaction from the mind, along with which flashes the knowledge of the object which was the external cause of these different changes from the ethereal vibrations to the mental reactions. These three are called in Yoga, Shabda (sound), Artha (meaning), and Jnâna (knowledge). In the language of physics and physiology they are called the ethereal vibration, the motion in the nerve and brain, and the mental reaction. Now these, though distinct processes, have become mixed up in such a fashion as to become quite indistinct. In fact, we cannot now perceive any of these, we only perceive their combined effect, what we call the external object. Every act of perception includes these three, and there is no reason why we should not be able to distinguish them." --Swami Vivekananda
Meditation connects oneself with the self at each level as body, mind and soul. These techniques help in transforming yourself via self-observation. Here are the crucial health benefits of meditation techniques such as vipassana.
- Lowers stress and anger while maintaining emotional balance: These techniques benefit mental health. The vipassana technique reduces stress and unpleasant emotions like anger. Thus, it benefits a person’s mental health. Meditative techniques like vipassana also aid in maintaining emotional balance and treat neurosis and other unhealthy emotional conditions.
- Enhances the immune system: Reduction of stress helps in increasing immunity. Various effective meditation techniques can improve immunity and keep you in good health condition.
- Lowers blood pressure: Daily meditation can help you lower blood pressure by making the body release less stress hormones that generally raise the BP. This is a crucial health benefit.
- Acts as an anti-inflammatory agent: Meditation techniques greatly assist in reducing and managing pain. This reduced or stress-free health condition in turn benefits in preventing several other symptoms like heart diseases, asthma, arthritis, psoriasis, etc.
